Lane von Herzen is a direct descendant of
Alexander Herzen, the central figure in
Tom Stoppard's critically acclaimed trilogy
of plays, The Coast of Utopia. Staged at
Lincoln Center in 2007, the plays comprised
an enormous critical and commercial success
-- winning more Tony awards than any dramatic
play in the award's history and extending their
run repeatedly due to sold-out performances.
Who could have imagined that a portrayal of
the
19th-century Russian intelligentsia (Herzen,
Bakunin, Tergenev, Belinski) risking all for the
possibility of the
serfs' emancipation, would
strike such a resonant chord with the public?
A historical and literary feast for theater-goers.
